Got tacos? Behold the gorgeous, vibrant colors of this fish taco. The fish is grilled, not fried, so it's also good for you. My Healthy Lunch Club member at work made this amazing taco for me and I just marveled at the purple and bright yellow when I first got the plate. Then I found out these beauties were cabbage and mango! Freshly chopped cilantro sprinkled on top added a splash of green and everything sat atop a perfectly spiced salsa verde and black beans. Just a fantastic combination of flavors and textures. Genius. Do try this at home.
What is this, you ask? Thanks to my dear friend, GS, I was introduced to this delicious pastry made from chickpea flour called khaman dhokla. This, too, is healthy because it is steamed and there's no butter in it (just a bit of oil). This baby is garnished with mustard seeds and sesame seeds that have been crackling in oil to bring out their wonderful aromas; as well as shaved dried coconut and while missing in the photo, freshly chopped cilantro (also adds some color and freshness). The flavors are amazing -- toasty and salty with a hint of chickpea. The best part, though, is that a highly serviceable version can be had from a box. Indian markets sell dozens of brands and I got the Gits brand that worked just fine. It's so easy, high in fiber, low in calories and a great healthy snack.
Last but certainly not least, I can't rave enough about this monstrously large chocolate croissant bread pudding at Masa in Echo Park. Masa is known for its deep dish pizzas but I've never had anything else there but this monumental and entirely satisfying dessert. I love chocolate croissants in their original form so no surprise that I'd love the bread pudding version. It's soft. It's sweet but not overly so (skip the syrup/sauce -- doesn't need it). It's chocolate-y and it feeds 20. I can't think of another dessert I'd want to devour at this very moment.
